Doug's Last Ride

Doug Phillips was cremated on Thursday September 18th following a service at his local church in  Pensby where he was a regular. The service was standing room only with family members attending from as far afield as Perth, Australia, plus  Doug's karate club and a good turnout from the North End, many in club colours, on their bikes leading the cortege from the church to Landican. It was revealed that Doug was given a bike on his 14th birthday and promptly left home! He will be missed by all.

It was subsequently decided that Mike Garner will organised a collection on behalf of the club for Doug’s favoured charity - prostate cancer research. Any North Enders who wish to contribute should pass their donations on to Mike at the clubroom or The Mills, or you can contact him on 648 3843.

Club Dinner

It’s that time of the year - the nights are drawing in, the shorts have been packed away until spring, and hardened racers are thinking about maybe having half a shandy at the Club Dinner and Prize Presentation.

This year’s event is, like last year, at The Grange Hotel in Thornton Hough, and will be held on Saturday November 15th, reception 6:30 for 7pm. The prizes will be presented by Les West, whose career highlight was a fourth-placed finish in the 1970 World Professional Road Race, held at Leicester. A three-course meal will be followed by entertainment by a live band - The Four Originals.

Tickets cost £21.50, and are being organised by Geoff Brandt. As last year, to promote take-up, Geoff is going to send out a pair of tickets to all club members, with a request to either return a cheque for them or to return the tickets. If you wish to order more, you can contact Geoff on 0151 652 0217 or geoff.brandt@ntlworld.com.

Of course, we can’t have a Prize Presentation without prizes, and trophy holders are reminded that that shiny cup that’s been sitting on your sideboard for the past year needs to be returned to Peter Byrne for a bit of spit, polish and engraving. You can contact Peter on 342 2749 or pete@diamonddesignheswall.co.uk to arrange collection or delivery.

Upcoming Events

Although the Marshalling Rota-controlled list of events is over for 2003, there are still some events to keep us busy over the winter. Coming up very soon is the hill-climb, on Sunday 19th October, which, as usual will be held at Hope Mountain. Join the usual club run leaving the Mills at 9:30 (ish!).

And there are two sessions at the velodrome, as first publicised last month, on the 15th of January and the 19th of February. The February session will be this winter’s Club Track Championships. Entry fees £7.50 for Seniors, with Juniors and Juveniles free.
