CLUB HILL CLIMB RESULTS

A large club run went out to Hope Mountain on 21st October but most of us ducked out of the race!! Andrew Christie won for the second year running with 8.01. John Moore was 2nd with 8.31, Mike Garner in 3rd with 8.40. However the medallist had better watch out as our newest and youngest member 13-year-old Steve Large (he isn’t) was 5th in 9 mins!!

Watch this space next year…

CONGRATULATIONS

As promised in September, details from the Walmsley division.

Claire is engaged to Steven Lloyd. The wedding will take place at Christ Church Willaston on 20th September 2002. On the other side of the family Paul’s son Mark (remember him?) is now the proud father of a son Jack Joseph Walmsley. Is this the third generation of Walmsley's to terrorise the North End?

On the racing front Clive is still struggling with his damaged elbows and arms was beaten in the Worlds Masters Championship at Manchester Velodrome. Clive was 5th in the points race (he won last year) It was a very rough race and he scored in the first two sprints, led out the third but got beat on the line. He managed to miss the bad crashes but in the end had to give best to 2 Australians, 1 German and 1 Frenchman, but he will get even next year!

DOUGIE UPDATE

Further to the Dougie Story in this month’s newsletter - I happened to be in the pub the weekend after he'd appeared on TV, sitting next to a table of 4 couples. One of them started to talk about track cycling, so I obviously started to listen to their conversation (anything to get my cycling fix). Anyway, after about 5 minutes they had worked out that the Track in Manchester was called a Velodrome, and then one of them told the story of the 80 year old, seen on BBC that week, who was the National Champion.

One of the party asked how this could happen - how could an octogenarian be the National Champion? 'Aaah - it's all those years of experience he has.' And with that the party were completely happy with the story. So congratulations Doug, probably half of the North West reckon your experience helped you to kick Jason Queally's butt! Yet another North End Champion to add to our list.

QUIZ

Maybe our members could do with a little mind teaser to entertain them during the dark winter nights?

Question
4 intrepid North Enders, namely Mike Garner, Andrew Christie, James Hartley and Danny Baird, enter a time trial with a difference.... they have to get all 4 across a bridge using only one tandem. The time taken to cross the bridge is the time of the slower of the 2 riders on the bike. If they only have the one tandem and they need to get all 4 riders across what is the sequence of riders used and what is the fastest time achievable?

Times of riders
Mike Garner           1 minute
Andrew Christie     2 minutes
James Hartley         5 minutes
Danny Baird          10 minutes

Answer in next newsletter

Chris Quinn

(Chris hasn't said as such but I think it's permitted for one person only to ride the tandem! - Ruaraidh)

JEFF’S PROGRESS

After a very good season in which he performed well in all his road races (he was very unlucky to puncture when in winning breaks), Jeff Vernon is now the 11th best 1st cat in the UK as listed on the BCF website. Jeff has even dabbled in a bit of time trialing this year, winning a couple of club events, as well as doing 1.56 in his first fifty. Elite licence awaits next season!!

AGM 13th DECEMBER 8PM

The club's Annual General Meeting will take place immediately after the December monthly meeting, starting at 8pm. Members are reminded that any items to be included in the agenda must be submitted to the Chairman 28 days before the meeting.

This is always a very important event in the clubs calendar but perhaps more so this year.

We need to find a new Chairman as John Burgess has completed his three-year term. Les Kennedy filled the position of club secretary temporarily, but he will not be continuing, so this position also needs to be filled.

John Burgess also filled in as time trial secretary last year so again we need a member to fill this post too. Other posts also remain vacant, and we do need members to come forward and be active. All too often it is the same people taking on the bulk of the work, and as a club of over 120 members it is disappointing to see not more than 20 or so attending club meetings.

Please come along and get involved.

This is your club and can only be as good as its members make it !!!

One of the important issues requiring urgent attention is insurance.

In the past each member has been covered for third party insurance under the C.T.C for a cost of £3.00 per rider. However this is due to rise to about £8.00 per rider, raising our subs.

There is a case for using the B.C.F. for our cover although the cover is much more comprehensive it also has a much higher cost.

This and many other issues need our attention, come along and be heard!!

TURBO SESSIONS

Clive Walmsley has held some turbo sessions at the clubroom for the last two Thursdays.

Anyone interested in taking part the next session is on Thursday November 22nd at 7.30.

NATIONAL HILL CLIMB CHAMPION

Congratulations to Susan Massey who was first lady in the National Hill climb Championships on Sunday 28th October.

Jim Henderson grabbed the headlines with his fourth consecutive championship. But Susan deserves more recognition, not only was she the first lady but it has to be mentioned she is still only a juvenile.

Susan’s brother Andrew also did a tremendous ride, was he first junior? The cycling press didn’t let us know that either!

LIGHTEST BIKE YET

(This should interest Roly)

A French cycling magazine reports on a road bike built as the lightest in order to appear in the Guinness Book of Records. The bike weighs only 4.68 kilos (10.3 pounds!!!) and is raceable. Built by Somec of Dedacciai tubing the frame weighs 946 grams. The selection of components is interesting. Carbon Aviotech fork (272 g), Campag Record gear lever with a down tube lever for the front changer, Campag Record rear mech, Dura Ace front mech, Lew wheels (848g), Stronglight headset, Campag 10 speed chain, TA cassette, Clement silk tubulars, ITM THE STEM (98g), 7 a Tune Speed saddle weighing 86g. The article lists every component & it's weight but space does not permit a full list. It also lists the 10 lightest components available for every part of a bike.

Peter Hudson

Pete may be able to find space for some of these in future newsletters if there is sufficient interest but I can give you the lists if you really need to know!

CLUB WEEKEND

A full report on the club weekend to Ironbridge in next months circular. But what happened to Geoff? Not only is his arm in a sling, but also he seems to have gone deaf!!

Geoff in a sling!

TECHNICAL TIPS

"Recent discovery of High Path engineering reveals that you do not have to be satisfied with the ratios offered ex stock for cassette blocks. This company will supply customised blocks at 7, 8, 9, & 10 spd to order from about £52 + p&p, can replace individual worn sprockets and can alter your sprocket spacings (Campag vs Shimano) or fit Campag on Shimano hubs. They also supply Maillard individual sprockets, from about £7 + p&p. One of their claims to fame is that Jason Queally used one of their oval chain rings to win his gold medal.

CLUB KIT

The club's kit will need amending this year, as Davies Brothers are no more. This presents us with the opportunity to modernise the design. The Bike Factory now has a new logo, this will need to be incorporated in any new design, but what do you think??

Some members have very strong feelings about the flame. Love them or hate them they are certainly distinctive. Personally I think we should retain them but maybe a bit subtler. Ian Boult is taking over from Les Kennedy on the kit supplies, so any ideas and designs send to him Email Ian Boult on info@cdcgroup.co.uk

We will be keeping Davies Bros and the Bike Factory registered with both the R.T.T.C. and the B.C.F. to prevent any member having to tape over the old sponsor whilst awaiting kit.

This is Ru’s idea, let us have yours!!

One suggestion for our new kit
