NATIONAL MASTERS TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS 2002

The North End was represented at Herne Hill by Clive Walmsley & Geoff Brandt in groups G & F respectively. On day 1 Geoff won silver in the 500m sprint, repeating his success of the 2000 National champs, losing once again to Geoff Cooke in a close final. On day 2 Geoff finished 4th in both his points race and his 500m time trial, suffering a hangover from the sunshine of the first day. Clive took silver in his points race behind Brian Dacey of De Laune CC, a past senior national champion. Day 3 saw more medals, first Geoff took silver in his 10km scratch race, losing to Sean Bannister of Team Quest who was taking his revenge for a semi final defeat on day 1. Immediately afterwards Clive matched his team mate by also taking silver in his scratch race, once again losing out to Brian Dacey.

LOCAL HERO

Steve Cummings (Sport & Publicity) so unlucky in the FBD Milk Race after having to retire with food poisoning when lying 6th overall and best young rider, made a successful return to UK racing. As a member of the successful British squad in the Irish Tour, he had made a fine contribution to the team until his retirement. The British team won four stages (Chris Newton 3 and overall points competition winner) & last years overall winner, Paul Manning (1) and also gained second place overall with Chris Newton after yet another convincing international performance.

Cummings in only his second race for his domestic sponsor Sport & Publicity, the talented young British international aged only 21 won Britain's top road race over the Queen's Jubilee holidays. The 149 km Featherstone RC " Pete' s Race" in Yorkshire last Monday attracted many of the best riders in the North of England in an event over 6 laps of a tough and undulating course. A small break developed almost from the start and Cummings and British international team-mate Paul Manning, together with a handful of others joined the leaders before the end of the first lap which now included Wayne Randle, Mike Jones and Julian Ramsbottom, amongst other notable names.

Although the top domestic team of John Tanner, Mark Lovatt and Kevin Dawson (Compensation Group) missed the original move, they proved to be best of the rest, after Cummings and Manning went clear with two laps to go. However it was far too late to make an impression on the flying duo of regular Great Britain internationals on one of their rare appearances in the UK. Cummings went clear in the last km to win easily with Paul Manning seemingly a contented runner-up. It was a couple of minutes before John Tanner came late to claim 3rd place.

Steve said "I was determined to win today and didn't want to leave anything to chance. Paul was flying but I felt stronger as the race went on. After not feeling too good in the Lincoln Grand Prix, I also wanted to produce a good ride for my new sponsors. I am off to France shortly to ride the Tour of Tarn /Gironde stage race with the National team and hope I can get more success there."
