MAJORCA 2001 B.N.E. AND FRIENDS.
Although this two week foreign holiday has been part of the North End calendar since the eighties I cannot recall mention in the club newsletter for almost twenty years.
The holiday started as a training camp for the racing fraternity in the Algarve organised by Don Hacking, moved to Majorca and after Dons untimely death the arrangements were taken over by Peter Hudson and Kate Alston and so 15 Northenders and 26 friends have just returned from the beautiful Mediterranean island with a climate in March/April similar to our warmest day.
Based in Pollensa on the northern coast and within sight of the towering limestone mountains that form the backbone of the island the party was offered a daily choice of one of three rides, the club run, the tourist ride, or a social section for those who had neither the desire or the inclination to clock up the miles climbing the passes of the Sierra de Tramuntana.
I opted for variety and clocked up around 700 miles and only some of it was in the high Sierras because Majorca apart from the Tramutana is basically a plain with arable fields dotted with hundreds of windmills whose purpose was to raise the water for irrigation from underlying Aquifers (alas these are all now defunct and the water is raised by electricity).
The only time we got wet was from the irrigation system that sometimes sprayed on to the road and a lot of the cycling was along lanes running through small fields growing aubergines new potatoes, olives and almonds and the air was scented with Mimosa and Wisteria in full bloom.
Our runs into the heart of the island took us back in time to medieval villages all placed on the top of a hill that had been built around a square where for lunch hundreds of cyclists congregated, riders that had come from all over Europe but mainly Germany.
We had our lunch in the sunlit square of Petra beside the fountain, in a quiet bar behind the church in Selva, on the top of a hill of course, other days beside the tiny bay of Cala San Vincente. One day we rode to Felantix and the café owner came out and presented each and every cyclist with a water bottle.
As self-aggrandisement is not unknown to contributors of this journal I will finish by proudly announcing that a portion of my 700 miles consisted of a trip to the mythical SA COLOBRA and so I earned my spurs!

CLUB 10 29th MAY
FASTEST
1st John Moore 22.26
2nd Jeff Vernon 22.27
3rd Mike Garner 22.17
HANDICAP
1st Chris Quinn 27.05
2nd Doug Watson 25.11
3rd Dave Newby 25.58
Very close contest between John Moore and Jeff Vernon after John won nearly all the club's T.T.s last year he now has serious competition. Both riders are having good seasons. John Moore won the West Cheshire 50 in May and Jeff Vernon was very strong and active in the North West Division 1st and Elite Road Race. Away in breaks for much of the race he eventually finished 8th a great ride!!!!
BILL BACK ON BIKE
Bill Davidson is back on his bike again and has been riding about 200 miles per week and is hoping to race again later in the season.

CLUB RECORDS II
Dave Baker informs me that Mark Baker holds the clubs juvenile 10 mile T.T record with 22.05. I would like to hear about claims for ladies records. I suspect Rachel Heal and Claire Walmsley would hold most of these?! But PLEASE let me know!!!

ISLE OF MAN
Last call for riders for the cycling week in the Isle of Man. The event is definitely on after doubts due to the foot and mouth crisis. Entries must be in by 20th June.
We have contested the champion club of the week for the last 3 years winning twice and it will be hard to win it for a 3rd time so we need as much support as possible.
