JUNIOR MEMBERS AWARD

Club members Mike Garner, Chris Byrne and Dave Lethbridge, winners of the National Junior 25 mile T.T team prize in 1999, were awarded belated Wirral sports Team Trophy on Sunday 8th July at The Oval sports Centre in Bebington.

Four Mayors attended together with top sports council official. The function was very well attended with everyone of importance in the sports scene there.

Radio Merseyside interviewed Mike Garner, there was an excellent buffet laid on after the prize presentation. Mike Garner received the prize on behalf of the rest of the team. (A trophy and sports vouchers to the value of £250.)

I was unable to contact Dave Lethbridge and Chris Byrne was away with the RAF. Andrew Massey stood in and I acted as team coach.

Doug Philips

(The lads only received this prize due to Doug Philips attending numerous sports council meetings and pursuing their claim for recognition. Many thanks Doug)

The competition between John and Jeff continues with Jeff getting the upper hand at the moment!! The enforced use of the park and ride due to the foot and mouth crisis has proved to be very popular and practical, this will hopefully become a permanent arrangement. The 24 mile T.T ‘s are poorly supported by the riders with the marshals and officials far out numbering the competitors. Can we find a safe and usable 25-mile course for our club events? Would the standard distance attract more riders? We should all thank John Burgess for stepping in to run the Club Events, doing an excellent job in addition to his many other duties within the club.

CRASH AND BURN!!

Hopefully everybody received the club circular last month (possibly more than one!!)

Unfortunately our computer at home had a major hard drive failure and I lost lots of information, distribution lists, new members etc. With help from Ru I managed to post out a copy to each member.

ENDURANCE

I wonder if Alan Johnston remembers the time that he had a drinking contest with Tommy Walker of Stockton Wheelers. The contest was held in the Green Bushes pub sometime in the early 1950’s. At the time Alan was adjudged to have won the contest but the more experienced Tommy went out to the men’s threw up and came back ready to start again!

There was well over the 8 drank, but not surprisingly Alan turned up on the Sunday morning for a ride to Weardale.

The last I heard was that Tommy Walker is still riding, still drinking, but I bet that Alan would still win!!
