CHAMPIONS AGAIN

Congratulations to all the riders and supporters of The North End as they retained the champion Club of the week title on the I.O.M during International Cycle Week in June. We had a smaller team than last year but its quality that counts, and we had quite a few wins and top ten placings as well as good points for completing races and marshalling.

This year the army cycling union made it very clear that they were determined to win the club award, even giving interviews on Manx radio stating the RAF as their main competitors!!

Well it was a close run competition but we managed to beat the Army by almost 100 points, but its getting more and more difficult with more clubs competing this year and promises of stronger competition for next year. This is good news for the organisers of Cycling Week, who have put in so much effort to encourage club riders back to the Island.

Our team of 15 riders did really well with the juveniles riding well in all the kermesse. Andrew Christie won 4 races and only failed to make it 5 out of 5 when he crashed heavily in Castletown, luckily only cuts and a broken helmet!

James Hartley and David Berry were always well up in their races. James was also first juvenile in the Laxey hill climb.

Our only junior this year Chris Byrne won the Port Erin Kermesse and junior 10-mile time trial.

Rachael Heal was unbeatable winning everything she entered. Ladies 25 mile time trial, (also 1st on handicap) ladies 10-mile time trial and ladies road race. (In the 2 up she and Chris won 1st team with a lady, Chris just managed to hold her wheel)

The rest of us managed to complete our races and score some top 10 placings, Keith Boardman, Mike Daley, Tony Flannery, Mike Garner, Rowland Brooks, Clive Walmsley, Dave Parry, Peter Byrne, Ian Boult and Chris Smith. Not forgetting the marshalling done by Harry and Doreen Mahar, and the help of Jack McAllister.

Our thanks must also go to Willie Moore for stepping in for Jack McAllister to ride the 2 up with James Hartley when Jack was unable to ride due to his recent illness.

We all had a great week on the Island and hope to do well again next year so we could do with a few more riders!

CLUB TROPHIES

The club is in the process of having all our trophies restored to their former glory. In order to do this I need to retrieve them from their present owners, so if you are in possession of one or more please phone me to arrange collection.

We are trying to have every trophy completed in time for our centenary dinner, so please contact me soon on 0151 342 2749 or 0151 336 5804

CLUB TROPHIES TWO

I am interested in researching the history of our trophies. Some of our trophies are very old and it would be interesting to know more about them.

At the moment I have completed the work on the Yates cup, The Kerr Cup, The James Cup and The Cullmpton Cup. If you know anything about these trophies or any or the others please let me know.

TRACK

Kirby track league, David Berry continues to dominate the juvenile section, winning nearly all his races. James Hartley is also riding well, gaining 3rd and 4th places regularly.

Jeff Brant is currently leading the veterans in the Northwest Track Championships, after the first round of sprints, with the 500 metre time trial and scratch race to come he is in a good position to retain the title he won last year.

Clive Walmsley and Peter Byrne are also riding the track league; again we could do with more riders!
