100 YEARS OLD

On Sunday 14th January it was exactly 100 years to the day that the club was formed in the Pacific Hotel, Price Street, Birkenhead. Members turned out in force, over 50 all in club kit and posed for photographs outside the Pacific with the Mayor.

She looked very smart in a long white coat standing next to a Penny Farthing. The photograph appeared in all the local papers later that week. It was a bitterly cold morning and the landlord of the Pacific did us proud by laying on free tea, coffee and biscuits, most welcome!!

The club members then left and made their way, retracing the route of some of the first club runs to Chester, calling in on the way at the Mills for tea and coffee. Then on to Chester for a hot pot lunch at a small hostelry [The Spital Vaults] behind The Bike Factory.

Dave Parry arranged this. Thanks and well done to all that helped organise the day.

J.R. Hartley and Danny Baird missed the start arriving too late! They must report to Mike Garner for forfeit.

CLUB TRACK DAY

The first club track training session of the New Year was attended by 10 North Enders and 9 guests on a cold winters morning. Some North Enders looked at the snow outside and rolled over, some more hardy members placed their bikes, snow shovels and blankets in the boot and travelled regardless. What was missing in quantity was more than made up for in quality with a number of PB's in the flying 200m and in all 3 hours of quality track time under the eye of our double World Champion, the honourable member from Willaston. Steve Light provided time keeping and massage.

You can check out results of the Flying 200m on the results page.

Next track session Sunday 18th February 2001

NEWS FROM DOWN UNDER

I recently received a letter from Sid Old relaying his cycling exploits in Perth West Australia.

It is mid summer there at the moment with average temperatures of 30c(90f)!!

Each Wednesday consists of a 7am run along the scenic coast road, meet up with 8 or so club cyclists at 8am another hour's ride to a marvellous beach and have a swim in the ocean, coffee at a pavement café, then ride home.

On another day we ride in the country, again meeting at 8am and riding through market gardens, forestation and bush land.

The roads are good and you can often ride for an hour without seeing a single vehicle.

Flocks of white, black or green parrots are a common sight as is the odd snake slithering across the road, and last week a pair of black eagles were perched on a telegraph pole!!’

That’s the sort of winter training we could all use!!

(Sid: if you read this Down Under, just know that we're now expecting you to kick the pants off everybody in the first Club '10' of the year! - Ruaraidh)
