LTTCA PRIZE PRESENTATION

At the recent LTTCA lunch the North End was well represented, not only was Doreen Mahar the guest of honour but we claimed several prizes.

Team prizes included the Express Shield, won in the Chester 50 by J. Vernon, P. Davies and J. Lyth. The Vice President’s Shield won in the West Cheshire 25 by J. Moore, P. Davies and A. Peden. Individual trophies included John Plumbley Memorial Trophy won by J. Moore. John was also runner up in the Middle Distance Championship. Ian Hawkins was also runner up in the Senior Championship.

Good performances by all, lets see if we can repeat it next year.

MAJORCA 2003

During first week in April 2003 flying out on Saturday 5th a group of 9 club members are going to Majorca for a week of training and generally a good time.

The riders committed to going are regular club run members and the rides will be steady but not necessarily eyeballs out, even though Clive is coming.

Majorca is generally warm but not too hot at this time of year and the Island offers a mountain range where 6 mile climbs with twisty hairpins can be found or alternatively flatter but undulating rides … the choice is yours.

Traffic is very light and there are a multitude of lanes which makes Majorca unique to other islands in the area or the mainland, hence its popularity with cyclists.

It is not my intention of organising an "official club holiday" but feel it only correct that the offer of joining us in Majorca should be made available to other club members.

If you are interested and want more details then contact me on 07778.408888.

Please be quick as there is little time.

MARJORIE MCALLISTER

Here are some extracts from an interview with Marj that appeared in the Merseyside Ladies Newsletter.

How did you come to take up cycling?

I was one of those lucky kids who got a bike for going to school, it sparked off a love affair with cycling. What a great way of getting about in the early 40’s. My younger sister Beatrice had taken up club cycling and just short of my 23rd birthday I joined her.

What was your first bike?

A BSA Gold Vase. I started proper cycling on Beatrice’s hand me down Longworth and later invested in a Claud Butler frame which cost me £14-7-6p.

What was your first club?

Liverpool Grosvenor CC and later returning to cycling after raising a family I joined the Birkenhead Vics. Eventually fed up with my husband’s nagging joined the North End.

Did you ever race?

Yes I raced at all distances achieving many team awards with Beatrice and Amy Hooton.

What were your major honours?

1951 Competition Team Record at 30 miles with Eileen Rogers. 1953 Competition Team Record at 10 miles with Josie Thornton. 1954 Nat. Championship Team at 25 miles with Maureen McCormick.

We also broke the 10 mile team record on Lydiate only to discover that the course that had been used for years was now short. I think Beatrice’s 3rd place in the 1954 25 mile Championship was the first individual medal gained in the Merseyside Ladies Association.
