April 2001

We are very sorry to announce the loss of two of our longest serving members.

GEORGE BROBYN

George Brobyn was 86 years old and joined the North end in 1936. During his time at the club he served in most capacities including as delegate on the National R.T.T.C.committee. He was club president for 14 years as well as being a respected timekeeper. Until recently he still enjoyed riding his mountain bike on the prom at New Brighton. George worked abroad and his travels took him to Kenya and Rhodesia where he spent 30 years. The funeral was held on March 15th and was well attended by club members both past and present.

ERIC JONES

Eric Jones a club vice president died on 12th March aged 88 years. Eric joined the North end in 1950 having formerly been a member of the Wallasey Silverdale C.C. Pre war he had served in the Palestine Police and was immensely proud of the fact that his father had been a seafaring captain. He will be well remembered for his absolute reliability in stewarding our evening events on the Huntington and Whitby Road courses as well as on the 12 hour finishing circuit. The funeral took place at Rosset on March 19th. Clive Walmsley and Doug Phillips represented the club, we extend our sincere sympathy to David, Hilary and family.

The club's 22 mile Hilly due to take place on Good Friday had to be cancelled due to roadworks on the course.

FUND RAISING FOR ALDER HEY

We have an autographed Lance Armstrong Foundation Polo shirt, signed by Miguel
Indurain, Lance Armstrong, Ron Kiefel, Eric Heiden, Sally Edwards and a few others. This was given to us in order to raise funds for Alder Hey, and the idea is for raffle tickets to be sold at the Flintshire & Club Dinner. Any ideas or help from club members on how to boost the takings would be appreciated.

CLUB TRACK SESSION

While most of the club time triallists were coming home from a cold, wet WCTCCA 25 on Sunday morning, the smart money was on a three hour thrash in the warm, dry Manchester Velodrome. Once again what was lacking in quantity was made up in quality, ample time was available to practise track skills and participate in Keirin, flying 200's and flying kilometres, on top of a 25 lap scratch race.

MAYORESS’S BIKE RIDE

I've got some info about the Mayoress's Bike ride that the club kindly agreed to support.

It is the 29th April and at Bidston Moss. It's only a 2k circuit, but apparently it is off road - and not suitable for racing bikes (although neither are any of Clives infamous shortcuts!) It starts at 12am and goes on to 4pm and you can go for as many laps as you want to. Minimum sponsorship level is £10 per rider, I'll have some forms with me on Thursdays, or anyone can ring Brenda on 0151 644 4700 at Groundwork Wirral - (they built the route)
