MON Was a very hard Ride over the Col De Champs 2693 metres. On to the Col De La Cyolle 3051 metres and down to Barcelonette for the night, hot and tired and looking forward to a good nights rest.
TUES Another very hard ride over the Col De Vars 3300 metres. Gordon was first over the top. He suddenly realised half way down he was alone. He climbed back to find me (andy) mending a puncture on the side of the road.
He had visions of me going over the edge as a Tour De France rider had done a few weeks earlier. Puncture mended we carried on to climb the Col DIzoard and on to Briancon, Knackered and ready for another good nights rest at another recommended watering hole.
WED We were supposed to be training for the LTTCA 12 hour event taking place the day after we arrived home. Instead we were like a couple of b----- mountaineers. Off we went heading for the Col Du Lautaret2058 metres. Over the top to the final climb of the tour the Col Du Galibier 3181 metres. We started to descend leaving the Alps behind towards Chambery. A much easier ride we rode on towards Chambery where we spent the night with our friends and cockroaches and their relatives! We wrapped ourselves up in sheets like mummies on the bed. Morning didnt come soon enough!
THURS We caught the super fast train from Lyon to Paris where we were to spend our last night on foreign soil. We stayed at the same accommodation we had used on our first night in France. We were greeted like long lost friends. I was a bit worried when mine host kissed Gordon on both cheeks. We decided to go shopping with the remainder of our money. We bought racing jerseys, cycling shoes, hats and presents for our parents.
FRI We flew from Paris to Northolt on to London, the train to Liverpool and home to Birkenhead.
We had an excellent holiday and all on £25 as in 1948 that was all the money you were allowed to take out of the country to spend.
Gordon and I were the first Birkenhead North Enders to have a biking holiday abroad. We were thought to be very adventurous if not a bit mad, as we didnt have a clue.
ANDY KELLY & GORDON THOMPSON
Ps-We both rode the LTTCA 12 hour on the Sunday, but thats another story, although Andy did win 2nd handicap!
RESULTS OF THE MLCA 10 (2.4.00)
The Merseyside Ladies 10 was held on the 2nd April, the previous sunny weather had given up and gone for a rest.
The event was held in constant rain, and conditions were almost as bad as the early season Club 10 that we had to cancel last year. No wind however more than made up for the rain and cold and good times were recorded. P Hodgkinson of team Lusso won it in 21.00.
NORTH END RESULTS WERE:
John Moore took 9th place in 22.10
Chris Byrne took 13th place in 22.27
Les Kennedy took 15th place in 22.43 for a 50 second
improvement on his PB (on Chriss bike!)
Ian Hawkins was 22nd in 23.08(and after a nasty spill
on the roundabout!)
Peter Kay recorded a 23.41
Ian Boult a 24.27(another PB)
Andrew Massey did 24.34
Colin Clowes a 27.05 in his first ever TT
and Mike Daly did a 28.15.
Prizewinners
Chris was the best junior by one second, and Andrew Massey was second schoolboy.
We would probably have won the team prize too, with three 22s, but sadly there was no team prize.

Les Kennedy at the MLCA. Bike by Chris Byrne, clothing by
Gucci, hair by Nicky Clarke, and make-up by L'Oréal (because
he's worth it!)

EARLY SEASON TIMES
Ian Hawkins not only went under the hour for the first time but knocked nearly five minutes off his previous best time, in The Port sunlight 25 mile Time Trial. He finished in 9th position in a quality field with a time of 56.39.!!! (Ill have a pint of whatever hes on!!)
Then In the Merseyside Ladies 10 he set another PB this despite crashing at the turn and badly gashing his calf. He did his 23.08 on one leg !!! (Ill have another pint of whatever he is on!!)
Les Kennedy, Ian Boult, Ian Hawkins, Andrew Massey and Peter Byrne have all set PBs already this year. Keep the results coming.
Chris.
